Dushanbe National Stadium Landscape Bridge Program
The Bridge of Romance is one of five landscape bridges surrounding the National Stadium in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The landscape bridge program was developed as an integrated design concept, with each bridge given its own architectural language while contributing to a coherent visual environment around the stadium.
The Bridge of Romance is a new-build structure. Civil construction was delivered by the client, while PFM was responsible for the decorative structure package and lighting scheme, including design development, detailed modelling, fabrication coordination and lighting integration.

Design Concept — A City That Blooms
Bridge 2-The Bridge of Romantic
Design Elements: Blooming Flowers
The bridge takes the form of a flower in bloom. Known for its blossoms, Dushanbe is often associated with the image of a city of flowers. The unfolding petal motif draws on this local character, expressing growth, openness and the warmth of the city.
The design goes beyond a floral outline. The curved petals create a continuous three-dimensional form that changes in appearance from different viewpoints. From the bridge deck, they frame the route ahead; from the surrounding approaches, they give the structure a distinctive identity within the stadium landscape.
Engineering & Fabrication — Precision From Model to Production
The flower-shaped design presented a practical engineering challenge: the curved aluminium panels have different degrees of curvature depending on their position on the bridge, requiring each panel to match its intended geometry and align accurately with the adjacent components.
PFM used Tekla and Rhino to develop the steel structure and curved aluminium panels respectively. Before production, the detailed models were coordinated to ensure accurate alignment between the structural framework and panel geometry, allowing the fabricated components to correspond to their intended positions and design geometry.
Through this process, the complex flower-shaped design was translated into clear production data and fabrication requirements, creating a continuous link from concept design and detailed modelling to fabrication and construction.
Lighting Design & Final Appearance
The lighting design follows the geometry of the flower-shaped structure, highlighting the curved petal edges while maintaining a balanced overall appearance. Concealed cabling is routed through structural tubes and other non-visible areas, keeping the finished structure clean from public viewpoints. At night, the lighting brings out the petal geometry and gives the bridge a distinctive presence within the stadium landscape.

Final Project Outcome
Completed Project — From Flower Concept to Built Structure
The completed Bridge of Romance brings the original flower-inspired concept into the stadium landscape. During the day, the curved panels form a continuous sculptural composition. After dark, the lighting reveals the petal geometry and gives the bridge a distinct presence within its surroundings.
As one of the five landscape bridges around Dushanbe National Stadium, the Bridge of Romance has its own design identity while sharing the project's coordinated approach to engineering, detailing, fabrication and lighting.
