PFM in Tajikistan: Delivering a National Landmark in Three Years
In 2023, this site was nothing more than a deserted framework.
As a dedicated landmark for the 35th anniversary of Tajikistan's independence, this national stadium carried significance far beyond architecture right from the start.
In April 2024, the PFM team, alongside Guangdong Provincial Design Institute, deployed to the site for precise surveying. Intensive milestone meetings followed in rapid succession, as the design matured through rigorous optimization from blueprinted concepts into reality.
Then came the first major setback. The Institute issued a stark warning: the existing framework lacked sufficient structural support; proceeding without reinforcement would carry consequences so severe they would have no choice but to withdraw.
The true test lay in executing the details. Starting in mid-2024, the PFM team conducted extensive rounds of technical coordination with Tajik stakeholders. On-site meetings, design reviews, and factory inspections became daily routine.
To overcome complex geological conditions, the team implemented structural reinforcement on critical elements in August 2024. As the visual centerpiece of the venue, the aluminum curtain wall featured complex curved surfaces that demanded extreme precision. After two rounds of fine-tuning, the aluminum fabrication process met design specifications by November 2024.
On December 30, 2024, the steel structure fabrication was completed, laying a solid foundation for the superstructure.
In 2025, addressing column eccentricity issues, the team formulated a specialized reinforcement scheme and proceeded with construction simultaneously. Every technical hurdle overcome reinforced their commitment to "Chinese Design, International Standards." With technical challenges resolved one by one, construction accelerated across all fronts.
On July 12, 2025, the roof space frame was completed, reaching structural topping-out just four and a half months after construction began. In parallel, work commenced on the stadium's exterior walls and two river-crossing landscape bridges.
This extraordinary efficiency earned high praise from the Tajik government delegation during their visit to China in July 2025.
A world-class stadium demands both speed and quality. On January 23, 2026, the final aluminum panel was installed, revealing the facade's signature "water ripple" concept. Subsequent lighting tests transformed the building into a breathtaking night display through media projection. At the main entrance, an artistic fountain feature incorporating the President's signature was installed, serving as the crown jewel of the stadium.
On August 21, 2026, the Dushanbe National Stadium was officially inaugurated. President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan hailed it as "a precious gift to the people."
Tajikistan's leading news outlet, Asia-Plus, explicitly reported that this national-level stadium was designed by the Chinese firm PFM. Multiple international sources—ranging from Wikipedia project entries to the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) annual reports—further validate PFM’s central role in delivering this landmark project.
From a derelict framework in 2023 to a national landmark in 2026, PFM delivered a national-scale project in just three years. It stands not only as a new architectural icon for Tajikistan, but also as a vibrant testament to China-Tajikistan friendship and the Belt and Road Initiative.
